With only a week left before the start of early voting, more than 6,000 people who registered to vote aren’t eligible to cast regular ballots yet because they failed to check a box on their registration forms. The number is expected to rise since county clerks are still working their way through last-minute registration forms that came in before last week’s deadline.
This is a pretty bizarre story. Basically, if you don’t have a driver’s license or state ID, you have to enter your Social Security number and check a box on the voter registration form in order to be eligible. However, a lot of people entered their SSN, but neglected to check the box. So, the state has a big mess to sort out, as they simply can’t deny this many applications without causing a big stink.
You know, the key to forms like this is to make them as simple as possible. The state of Colorado has some work to do in that area.
