2008 Elections: Closing Thoughts

Well, this is it.  In about 13 hours, all the polls will be closed.  Barring another 2000-esque debacle, we should know our next President in 12 to 18 hours.

I’m 33 years old, and this is the first election I’m voting in.  I have no good excuse; I guess it’s just a mix of apathy and laziness that I finally grew out of about a year ago (the friends I keep also provided a little kick in the butt).

Things I’ve learned as a first-time voter:

1) The system sucks.  No, not capitalism or the government laid out in the Constitution, but the system that allows elected officials to care more for themselves and their buddies than they do for the people that elected them.  I think there’s a revolution of sorts coming, and those in power won’t like it!

2) Some people just shouldn’t be allowed to vote.  I have at least one friend whose reason for voting Obama boils down to a “man crush.”  While I think Obama is the worst possible option, I support peoples’ right to vote for him.  But seriously, at least do a little research and have a good reason!

3) Neal Boortz is right: “I believe that the principal difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is that the Democrats just want to grow our Imperial Federal Government a bit faster than the Republicans do.” At the end of the day, what’s truly hurting the Republican party is that they’ve become, with some exceptions, “Democrats Lite.”

So, I’m on my way to locate some school that’s allegedly in my neighborhood and vote; you should do the same (well, other than finding that school in my neighborhood; I suspect they’d just send you away if you don’t live around here).

Oh, my prediction?  Well, yesterday I made the statement that Sarah Palin is probably the next Republican President.  However, the polls are close, possibly skewed, and have enough of a margin of error that it’s really anyone’s game.  I’m calling McCain in an upset, thus defeating the looming socialist nightmare.

Should McCain Lose, At Least We Get An Entertaining VP!

From FoxNews.com:

“My sister is smart, runs every one of my campaigns; is beautiful; graduated with honors from college; is homecoming queen. But she’s a … she is what I call a ‘girl-boy’ growing up, you know what I mean?”

“And I tell you what? Girl-girls are tougher than girl-boys,” he said. “But there’s one important thing I noticed. The great thing about marrying into a family with five sisters, there’s always one that loves you. ‘Cause you can count on splitting them a bit. You know what I mean?

Obama's Aunt Is An Illegal Alien

Barack Obama’s aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Honestly, while she is here illegally, the fact that she’s in Boston probably washes Barack’s hands of any involvement.  The part I find more concerning is that she’s living in public housing while her millionaire nephew lives in a large house in Illinois.  Between her and Obama’s brother, I have to ask:  Does the man who’s most likely our next President care about anyone other than himself?  If he can ignore family, what’s he going to do for a bunch of strangers?

Sarah Palin was on Saturday Night Live this week. Here are a few clips:

Is Barack Obama a U.S. Citizen?

Philip Berg doesn’t think so:

Here’s the FactCheck.org article referenced in the video.

Considering that Obama has a history of getting his opposition disqualified, I have no problem with anyone doing the same to him. However, this birth certificate mess won’t lead to anything. Like it or not, he’s a citizen.

Honestly, even if he’s not a citizen, he’ll hold off as long as possible providing documents. So, then we get President Joe Biden. Not exactly a better alternative.

Palin Talks Troopergate

She’s right, though this has done just enough damage to neutralize the more popular half of the GOP’s team. The election is most likely over, but I’m sure we’ll see Sarah in 4 years to pick up the pieces.

The Perils Of An Uninformed Electorate

Due to the massive length of this year’s ballot, voters are now leaning on elected officials and third-party voter guides to help them navigate the election.

Ballot guides are not a new concept and the most well known is the “State Ballot Information Booklet,” conversationally known as the blue book, put out by the General Assembly’s legislative council prior to every statewide election. But as voters are blasted with political ads from every angle, it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to keep up with all the issues. Many voters are responding by turning to more partisan sources for information.

This is good news for groups trying to get something passed, bad news for our system of government.  Let me give you an example:

Amendment 48 that’s on this year’s ballot seeks to change the state Constitution to define a fertilized egg as a living being.  I’m pro-life, so if you come to me, I’m going to unashamedly present my side of the case in the best light possible, and depending on the mood I’m in when you ask, may go as far as to demonize the opposition.

Now, if you find a pro-choice view that equals mine, then you’ve heard both sides and can make a fairly educated decision.  Good on ya!  However, if you just stay with my view without even listening to the other side, you’ve pretty much given me a second vote.

Not all ballot issues are as simple as Amendment 48 (let’s face it, this is an abortion issue, and I’ve never met anyone without an opinion on that).  So, in the case of amendments that you don’t know anything about and that are worded in a confusing manner (Google a sample ballot for your county, and you’ll see what I mean.  Stupid legalese), what do you do?

Well, like it or not, to avoid being a sheep in the uninformed electorate requires homework.  My suggestion would be to stay on top of what local, state, and federal government are doing so you can vote accordingly.  If you haven’t done that, then…well…I guess you need to use the next 4 weeks to get acquainted with the issues!

New McCain Ad: Biden's Incorrect Debate Claims

The McCain campaign jumps right on Biden’s lies:

In Case You Missed It…

C-SPAN has posted the VP debate in its entirety.

Worst. Campaign Ad. Ever.

Maybe it’s me, but it seems the key to presenting an argument is to actually present the argument! You haven’t done anything to convince the undecided/independent voter why this is bad (it’s not, but this group obviously disagrees with my point of view).

Bottom line, somebody wasted money producing this rather stupid ad.

Obama: McCain Fails to Mention Middle Class

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama sought to score a quick post-debate advantage Saturday by traveling to two Republican-leaning states and accusing GOP rival John McCain of being out of touch with middle-class Americans.

“We talked about the economy for 40 minutes and not once did Sen. McCain talk about the struggles middle-class families are having,” Obama told more than 26,000 people who stood out in the rain with him on the campus of the University of Mary Washington.

You know, I realize Barack Obama’s and Joe Biden’s best bet is to paint the Republican party as the Rich White Guy party, but to me it seems more like condemnation for not using the same buzzwords.  I guess it would work better if they actually did some homework, because even though he’s not throwing around the actual phrase “middle class,” McCain is saying a lot of the same things as Obama.
