Libya blocks UNSC’s condemnation of Jerusalem attack

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 7 (APP): Libya blocked the UN Security Council Thursday from issuing a condemnation of an attack that killed eight Jewish religious students in occupied Jerusalem, arguing that the 15-member body must also condemn Israeli attacks in Gaza, diplomats said. At least four other council members backed the stand taken by Libya, the only Arab member on the council, they said.

Again, Israel was retaliating for years of Qassam rocket attacks. Where’s the condemnation for those? Is it impossible for the security council to do something that even slightly supports Israel?

(IsraelNN.com) United States President George W. Bush urged the United Nations to reform its Human Rights Council Tuesday, criticizing the body for ignoring abuses in places like Iran “while focusing its criticism excessively on Israel.”

“The American people are disappointed by the failures of the Human Rights Council,” Bush said. “The United Nations must reform its own Human Rights Council.”

Israeli officials are strongly opposed to a Lebanese proposal being considered by the United Nations that would see border between the two nations redrawn in an apparent effort to appease Hizballah and other terrorist organizations.

‘We can call this conference anti-Israeli,’ Polish MEP says

A conference of UN NGOs (non-governmental organizations) on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to be hosted at the European Parliament this month, will be boycotted by Polish Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from across the political spectrum, who say that the conference is biased against Israel.

Thank God a country that isn’t Israel can see this!

The United Nations Security Council on Friday called on Hezbollah to immediately and unconditionally release abducted Israel Defense Forces soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser.

In a Presidential Statement, the Security Council expressed concern over the fact that the soldiers are still being held by Hezbollah, and that the organization has yet to provide any sign of life from the two.

Remember The Brady Bunch Movie? Well, there’s a scene where Marcia’s original date to a dance (Doug) calls her a less-than-polite name, and the nerdy guy who’s got a crush on her (Charlie) decides to defend her honor:

Charlie: Hey, I heard what you said, Doug, and I’m not gonna let you talk to Marcia like that.
Doug: Yeah?
Charlie: Yeah.
Doug (grabbing Charlie up by his shirt, causing it to pull across his throat): Well, what are you gonna do about it, geek?
Charlie: I’m gonna… lose… consciousness…

While this move by the UN is a step in the right direction, I cannot help thinking they’ll be playing the role of Charlie…

A United States congressional delegate to the United Nations is pushing for the United States to cut off funding for the UN Human Rights Council, saying the watchdog group’s focus on Israel and failure to investigate other countries made it a disaster.

I’m in agreement. Based on all the hate and atrocities going on in the world, how is it that Israel is the only nation to have the permanent condemnation of this group?

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the slaughter in Darfur was triggered by global climate change and that more such conflicts may be on the horizon, in an article published Saturday.

“The Darfur conflict began as an ecological crisis, arising at least in part from climate change,” Ban said in a Washington Post opinion column. UN statistics showed that rainfall declined some 40 percent over the past two decades, he said, as a rise in Indian Ocean temperatures disrupted monsoons. “This suggests that the drying of sub-Saharan Africa derives, to some degree, from man-made global warming,” the South Korean diplomat wrote.

“It is no accident that the violence in Darfur erupted during the drought,” Ban said in the Washington daily. When Darfur’s land was rich, he said, black farmers welcomed Arab herders and shared their water, he said.

With the drought, however, farmers fenced in their land to prevent overgrazing. “For the first time in memory, there was no longer enough food and water for all. Fighting broke out,” he said.
